Entering the Fifth Epochal

Revelation Through the "Door"

(September 22, 2016)

In 1955, mankind was blessed with The Urantia Book. It is the fifth of the epochal revelations that have been given to mankind beginning from the time mankind acquired the potential to worship. The fourth epochal revelation was the life and ministry of Jesus of Nazareth. For the past 2,000 years, the only reliable record of that revelation is contained in the New Testament writings of The Bible. Yet, in reviewing The Urantia Book (UB)  we notice that the divine revelation – the part that was previously unknown and unknowable without divine intervention – is contained particularly in Parts I, II and III; whereas Part IV is a restatement and expansion of the fourth revelation. So, why is the fourth included as part of the fifth? There must be some universe reason for this.

We believe the reason is because the fourth revelation has not yet accomplished its purpose.  According to Paper 170, the true essence of the fourth revelation became submerged under manmade dogma:

The kingdom of Jesus’ teaching, the spiritual ideal of individual righteousness and the concept of man’s divine fellowship with God, became gradually submerged into the mystic conception of the person of Jesus as the Redeemer-Creator and spiritual head of a socialized religious community. In this way a formal and institutional church became the substitute for the individually spirit-led brotherhood of the kingdom.

(UB 170:5:9)

     Submerged, but not lost!

Mistake not! there is in the teachings of Jesus an eternal nature which will not permit them forever to remain unfruitful in the hearts of thinking men. The kingdom as Jesus conceived it has to a large extent failed on earth; for the time being, an outward church has taken its place; but you should comprehend that this church is only the larval stage of the thwarted spiritual kingdom, which will carry it through this material age and over into a more spiritual dispensation where the Master's teachings may enjoy a fuller opportunity for development. Thus does the so-called Christian church become the cocoon in which the kingdom of Jesus' concept now slumbers. The kingdom of the divine brotherhood is still alive and will eventually and certainly come forth from this long submergence, just as surely as the butterfly eventually emerges as the beautiful unfolding of its less attractive creature of metamorphic development.

(UB 170:5:21)

We are living in that “more spiritual dispensation,” thanks to the expanded understanding of the fourth revelation as set forth in Part IV of the UB. We, who are living during this time, have the opportunity to develop “the divine brotherhood” that must be achieved before we can move forward in the progressive enlightenment intended for an evolutionary world.  Specifically, we cannot expect a Magisterial Mission by a Avonal Son until ‘the brotherhood of mankind flourishes and we have learned to live on earth in peace and tranquility.’ (See UB 52:4) The key to achieving the divine brotherhood is found in the ministry of the fourth revelation!

Failing to develop a brotherhood based on the life and teachings of Jesus is the reason why the dissemination of the fifth revelation has been stifled and relatively unfruitful. And the failure to understand the fourth revelation is the reason why the fifth revelation community has suffered so many defaults and set backs at the hands of prideful charismatic leaders.  Jesus explained this potential in his “Sermon on the Good Shepherd:”

The true shepherd gathers his flock into the fold for the night in times of danger. And when the morning has come, he enters into the fold by the door, and when he calls, the sheep know his voice. Every shepherd who gains entrance to the sheepfold by any other means than by the door is a thief and a robber. The true shepherd enters the fold after the porter has opened the door for him, and his sheep, knowing his voice, come out at his word; and when they that are his are thus brought forth, the true shepherd goes before them; he leads the way and the sheep follow him. His sheep follow him because they know his voice; they will not follow a stranger. They will flee from the stranger because they know not his voice. This multitude which is gathered about us here are like sheep without a shepherd, but when we speak to them, they know the shepherd's voice, and they follow after us; at least, those who hunger for truth and thirst for righteousness do. Some of you are not of my fold; you know not my voice, and you do not follow me. And because you are false shepherds, the sheep know not your voice and will not follow you.

(UB 165:2.4)

Any who attempt to bypass Jesus to try to get into the kingdom without him is a thief and a robber.  He has broken through the window, not accessed the doors. And like a thief, in time, he or she will be expelled.  So, if we are to have real success in disseminating the fifth revelation, we must ‘enter through the door’ by means of the ministry of the fourth revelation:

And now, lest some of you too easily comprehend this parable, I will declare that I am both the door to the Father’s sheepfold and at the same time the true shepherd of my Father’s flocks. Every shepherd who seeks to enter the fold without me shall fail, and the sheep will not hear his voice. I, with those who minister with me, am the door. Every soul who enters upon the eternal way by the means I have created and ordained shall be saved and will be able to go on to the attainment of the eternal pastures of Paradise.

(UB 165:2.7)

This concept of entering through the door is further established by the concept of “God the Sevenfold” – the Universal Father’s procedure for evolutionary creatures to approach Deity. The fact is, “Unqualified Paradise Deity is incomprehensible to the evolving creatures of time and space.” (See UB 0.8, 116:2) Anyone who believes otherwise is deluding him or herself. Thus, we must encounter Deity in the following successive order:

1. The Creator Sons (and Creative Spirits)

2. The Ancient of Days

3. The Seven Master Spirits

4. The Supreme Being

5. The Conjoint Actor

6. The Eternal Son

7. The Universal Father

We progressively move through Deity understanding from one through to the other.  In other words, we get to the Ancient of Days through the door of the Creator Son, and to the Master Spirit through the door of the Ancient of Days, etc. So if we wish to get on the “highway to heaven,” we must begin by approaching Christ Michael and following his directives first.

Based on the above, it is clear that any who are concerned about effectively disseminating the fifth revelation must do so by the method and means set forth in the fourth revelation by our Master Son as recorded in the New Testament writings and expanded upon in the UB. Here is what he expressly asked that we do:

“Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

– Matthew 28:18-20

“I have plainly told you that I must leave you in the world to carry on the work of the kingdom. It was for this purpose that I set you apart, in the hills of Capernaum. The experience you have had with me, you must now make ready to share with others. As the Father sent me into this world, so am I about to send you forth to represent me and finish the work I have begun.”

– UB 178:3.2

This ministry is the means by which our world will be uplifted:

“The great hope of Urantia lies in the possibility of a new revelation of Jesus with a new and enlarged presentation of his saving message which would spiritually unite in loving service the numerous families of his present-day professed followers.”

(UB 195:10.16)

It is quite noble to seek to advance civilization through innovative ideas about government and rulership, by advanced medicine and personal hygiene, and by humanitarian programs and institutions. But for any of these efforts to have lasting benefits that lead to spiritual readiness for a greater revelation, there must first be developed a worldwide brotherhood based on the life and teachings of Jesus:

Religion does need new leaders, spiritual men and women who will dare to depend solely on Jesus and his incomparable teachings. If Christianity persists in neglecting its spiritual mission while it continues to busy itself with social and material problems, the spiritual renaissance must await the coming of these new teachers of Jesus’ religion who will be exclusively devoted to the spiritual regeneration of men. And then will these spirit-born souls quickly supply the leadership and inspiration requisite for the social, moral, economic, and political reorganization of the world.”

(UB 195:9:4)

Yes, social, moral, economic and political advancement is achieved by means of a spiritual renaissance led by men and women who rely solely on Jesus’ teachings! Being just such spiritual men and women should be the goal of all readers in the UB community.

But, we might ask, what about the revelation of the heavens and the cosmology of the universe that is contained in the rest of the UB? What are we supposed to do with that? We believe that information is provided for our edification and encouragement. We learn why we are here and why we are in the condition we are in, and we are given a glimpse of what the future holds. The heavenly revelation is our peace, our solace and our soothing balm. Knowing in advance the details of the ascension career and the joys set before us allows us to expend our lives working to readjust our confused planet and strengthens us to do the work at hand. It allows us to contemplate our future in a way that mortals of prior epochs could not do. We are able to keep our minds fixed on the things that are eternal and everlasting, while we work to complete the things that are temporary.

In future articles, we will discuss more about how we go about completing the fourth revelation. In the meantime, we welcome your comments regarding the need to enter the fifth epochal revelation through the door of the fourth.
